Retrofit
Incentive for Industry

Jurisdiction: Canada and Federal government
Action area: Industry - incentive is available for organizations that own/manage/lease the following types of buildings:
 
  • Commercial and institutional
  • Territorial and Municipal
  • Multi-Unit residential
  • Mixed-use commercial/residential buildings

Eligible buildings for this incentive cannot exceed 20,000 square meters (215,279 sq. ft) and can include up to 10 buildings

Dollar value:
(lowest of the
following amounts)
  • $10 per gigajoule (277.8 kilowatt hours) of annual estimated savings
  • 25% of eligible project costs *
  • $50,000 per project ($250,000 per organization)

* NRCan will provide a financial incentive of up to 25 percent of project costs to a maximum of $50,000 per application and $250,000 per corporate entity to help small- and medium-sized industrial facilities implement energy-saving projects.

Note:
To be eligible for an incentive, companies must be approved for funding by NRCan and a Contribution Agreement must be signed by both NRCan and the company before starting the energy retrofit. Costs or expenses incurred or paid by your company before this signed-off funding approval are the sole responsibility of your company and no liability exists on the part of NRCan

Comercial Deployment Incentive

Jurisdiction: Canada and Federal government
Action area: Deployment incentives will be provided for qualified solar thermal installations
 

To be eligible, the applicant must be a:

  1. Businesses and Industries: conducting business, and deploying systems in Canada;
  2. Crown Corporations listed in Section 85 and Part I of Schedule III of the Financial Administration Act (FAA);
  3. Public Institutions: such as schools, hospitals, municipalities, municipally owned utilities, industry associations
  4. Non-profit organizations; and
  5. Energy Service Companies.

Incentive Level:
  1. The incentive is calculated as follows:

    Performance Factor x Incentive Rate x collector area = anticipated incentive amount

    • Performance Factor is the predetermined factor for the collector installed. This factor can be found on the List of Accepted Collectors. The performance factor attributed to the collector that you have selected will be valid as of the date of reception of your CDI-2008 application.
    • Incentive Rate is the incentive per m2 for each collector type. Find the collector rate on the Incentive Rate table.
    • Collector Area is the total installed area in square meters. This value can be calculated from the individual areas found on the List of Accepted Collectors.
  2. The maximum incentive is $80,000 per solar air installation.
  3. The maximum incentive is $400,000 per solar water installation (effective March 1, 2009).
  4. The corporate maximum incentive for multiple installations is $2 million.

What buildings
qualify?

  1. Commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings; and
  2. Multi-unit residential buildings which have a common entrance and have either at least four above-ground storeys or a building footprint of at least 600 m2;
  3. Residential buildings located in Remote Communities in which at least 50% of the floor area of the building is used for commercial, industrial, or institutional purposes.

CSIPEI Program

Examples of eligible buildings are:

  • Retail buildings
  • Hotels
  • Restaurants
  • Office buildings
  • Grocery stores
  • Institutional buildings (municipal buildings, churches, non profit and post secondary colleges and universities)
  • Large multi-unit residential buildings (MURBs) (floor area larger than 6,456 square feet or 600 square metres ) For MURBs 600 m2 or less see separate MURB program.
  • Recreational facilities
  • Others
Jurisdiction: Prince Edward Island (CSIPEI Program)
Action area: Industry -
 
  • Up to $3,000 towards an evaluation to determine potential energy efficiency upgrades
  • Up to $25,000 towards the energy retrofitting project costs

    **Incentive based on building size and classified into three categories:
    Class I (up to 15,000 sq. ft)
    Class II (15,000 to 75,000 sq. ft)
    Class III (75,000 or larger)

Class l Building:  

(up to 15,000 square feet or 1,394 square metres)

  • Financial assistance for 50% of the cost of an energy audit to determine the potential for energy efficiency upgrades, up to a maximum of $1,000.00.
  • $15 per gigajoule* (GJ) saved (up to a maximum of $15,000). Based on estimated annual energy savings determined by an energy audit.
  • Gigajoule (GJ): is a metric term used for measuring energy use. For example, 1 GJ is equivalent to the amount of energy available from either: 277.8 kWh of electricity, or 26.1 m3 of natural gas, or 25.8 litres of heating oil

Class ll Building:  

(between 15,000 and 75,000 square feet or 1,394 and 6,968 square metres)

  • Financial assistance for 50% of the cost of an energy audit to determine the potential for energy efficiency upgrades, up to a maximum of $2,000
  • $10/GJ saved (up to a maximum of $20,000). Based on estimated annual energy savings determined by an energy audit.

Class lll Building:  

(75,000 square feet and larger or 6,968 square metres and larger)

  • Financial assistance for 50% of the cost of an energy audit to determine the potential for energy efficiency upgrades, up to a maximum of $3,000.
  • $10/GJ saved (up to a maximum of $25,000). Based on estimated annual energy savings determined by an energy audit.
